What Are You Thirsty For?

There are longings (yearnings, desires, hungers) in the human heart that go beyond biological. They are in the soul, and they are the ones without which we feel incomplete in life. What does our soul long for? We long for friendship, love, fun. We long to belong, to be embraced, welcomed, to be noticed. We long for fulfillment, prosperity, happiness.

There is a book in the Bible that reveals the yearnings of the soul. It’s the book of Psalm. The Psalm was once called “The Book of Emotions” because in it are exposed the most diverse emotions like JOY, SADNESS, ANGER, FEAR, DESPERATION, & HOPE. In the Psalms we see ourselves in the MIRROR, we find the MEDICINE for our inner pains and we receive WISDOM for life! Psalm 1 reveals the thirst of the SOUL and also reveals to us the MEDICINE that heals.

THE HUMAN SOUL IS THIRSTY FOR HAPPINESS

If you ask someone to say in a single word what he/she wants out of life, they will probably say, “I want to be HAPPY.” The problem is to define what is HAPPINESS. For many to be happy is to have a lot of money. For others it is to be healthy, to have good relationships. The Bible does not say what HAPPINESS is, but it does say what kind of person is happy. It’s the one who chooses the RIGHT WAY of life! Psalm 1:1 “Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers…”

THE HUMAN SOUL IS THIRSTY FOR SATISFACTION

A song said: “I can’t get no satisfaction. Cause I try and I try, and I try, and I try. I can’t get no, I can’t get no… When I’m drivin’ in my car. And that man comes on the radio. I can’t get no satisfaction… When I’m watchin’ my TV. And that man comes on to tell me. I can’t get no satisfaction… When I’m ridin’ round the world. And I’m doing’ this and I’m signing that. I can’t get no. I can’t get no satisfaction. No satisfaction”

Mick Jagger reveals the longing of the human soul, and that in this world we can’t get satisfaction. Why does it happen? According to Psalm 1, does happen because SATISFACTION is searched in wrong SOURCES. Three things summarize the human soul’s quest for SATISFACTION: MONEY, POWER (FAME) AND SEX! Humanity has never had so much of these three things, and still the human soul has never been so UNSATISFIED. Where then is the SOURCE for SATISFACTION for the human soul? Psalm 1: 2 responds “… but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night…” Satisfaction can be found only in the treasure called the “Word of God.” There are answers for the afflicted, the hopeless, the lost, the sick, the failed.

THE HUMAN SOUL IS THIRSTY FOR PROSPERITY

Perhaps this is one of the most evident longing of our time. Everything around us tries to sell us something, so we can be considered as prosperous and successful people! The problem is that the idea of accumulating to become prosperous has made us even more anxious! It’s like being thirsty and drinking sea water! The situation will only get worse! What is it to be prosperous according to the Word of God? To be prosperous is to reach a goal, it’s to fulfill a purpose. What purpose? GLORIFYING GOD IN EVERYTHING! That is the ultimate purpose of life! Psalm 103:1 Let all that I am praise the Lord; with my whole heart, I will praise his holy name.
